Outlook, RSS, and a OLE error
As of late I have been using MS Outlook as my mail and RSS client of choice. It ran fine for a while, until I started bumping into a fun little error with my RSS feeds….
And while this bug at first only affected one RSS feed… it soon spread. So a google later I discovered that outlook’s support for RSS feeds was patchy at best (for example, when your log file gets to over 2gigs it fails with no error).
One person suggested deleting some files, after which outlook basically ignored my mininova feed… bar that my mininova feed was right there. Wohoo! Another suggested re-entering all my feeds. This fixed the problem for all of about 8 hours (until I woke up). Again, Wohoo!
Eventually I discovered this blog buried deep within Google, stating that the issue was not only a known issue between IE6 and outlook, but that the fix required me to get another piece of MS software, specifically IE7. Oh, and they are not planning on fixing it.
Now I’m not sure about you, but when I installed office, I expected it to work out of the box as long as I met the min requirements (which for the record, I do) and not require me to install another piece of software to get it to work.-
Also, for the record, on the MS bug site it lists this as an issue with a limited number of RSS feeds. In my experience it effected at least half, and was seemingly random in which it effected.
I have now bit the bullet, and am in the middle of installing IE7, which was fun in itself, considering that the link is buried under about 4 links to install IE8, which is still listed as beta, but is being pushed it seems, as the current release. o.O

Good luck with the upgrade! For me, the problem re-asserted itself with IE7 within a week…hence the update on my blog post. I’m fairly certain Microsoft will never fix this, but then again, why use their stupid email software for RSS anyway? Hell, why use their stupid email software…..?

Thanks, currently after a dreaded restart it is working again.
For how long is apparently another thing. Oh well, guess when it does rear its head again it will be of to feed daemon or some such, and one less reason to use outlook over thunderbird.
