This is kind of exciting because if you have someone that you really really hate, you can call up the hotline and speak to someone called “Craig” (i.e. a bloke called Mohammad speaking from a tiny mud hut in Uruguay) and you can whisper confessionally to “Craig”: “I have a friend living in Whitby who recently … *tiny gasp* … downloaded a video off YouTube of a kitten falling off an ironing board. This is against their Terms and Conditions and constitutes copyright infringement.”

“Craig” would then have order an elite team of Ninjas (oh all right, Pirate Ninjas) to tip-toe to the house in Whitby and cut off the internet, possibly with either nail clippers or a Binford 1200X Power Chainsaw, depending on the budget. “Neighbourhood Watch” would soon be vigilantes armed with ninja-seeking missiles.

Do you think if as soon as this thing comes into law, we can start a protest by getting everyone we know to flood the hotline number (or whatever it is) and say the following sites are downloading illegal files: The Warehouse, Vodafone, Farmers, some Minister of Something’s office computer, Salvation Army HQ, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (we can say they downloaded some donkey porn to spice things up) or anyone in Government office that you’re not quite fond of (e.g. that guy whose name escapes me but almost rhymes with Mohn Jey).

Do you think that might make them realise what a stupid idea it is to have no investigative planning in place? Worth a shot, right?

For how long is apparently another thing. Oh well, guess when it does rear its head again it will be of to feed daemon or some such, and one less reason to use outlook over thunderbird.
